We've heard every version of it. And, honestly, we understand.
Because when you're the one being dragged down the street, when you're the one avoiding visitors, when you're the one apologizing for your dog's behavior, it's easy to believe your dog is the exception.
But after working with hundreds of dogs, we've learned something important:
Most dogs are capable of far more than their owners realize.
The issue usually isn't that the dog is incapable. The issue is that nobody has shown them how to succeed. And nobody has shown YOU how to create the relationship that makes freedom possible.
Meet Remi:
The dog that went from biting their owner to adventure companion in 30 days.
When Remi's owners first reached out to us, they weren't looking for an "adventure dog", they were looking for help.
They had fallen in love with a rescue pit mix they were fostering and eventually decided to adopt him. Like most rescue owners, they saw all the good in him. He was affectionate, goofy, intelligent and quickly became part of the family.
But they were also overwhelmed.
Walks had become difficult because Remi pulled so hard on leash that only one family member could comfortably handle him. Visitors created stress. Family gatherings required constant supervision. He barked at neighbors, reacted strongly to strangers and couldn't reliably come when called.
Then there were the incidents that truly shook their confidence.
On two separate occasions, Remi bit his owner after she attempted to move him by his collar. While neither incident caused serious injury, they left bruises and created something even harder to deal with: uncertainty.
His owners loved him deeply, but they no longer trusted him. And that's a painful place to be.
Like many owners, they weren't looking for perfection. They wanted him to be part of their life instead of something they constantly had to manage. Most importantly, they wanted the future they had imagined when they first decided to keep him.
